''CUFFS'' is a fresh and authentic cop show from the BBC with a great ensemble of characters, amongst which are a gay cop, a lesbian cop, a strong female detective, a black cop, and a muslim cop. Never typecast, these are well-rounded characters reflecting the diversity of contemporary society in the vibrant and alternative seaside city of Brighton (which has a very large gay population).
This visceral drama takes the audience on an exhilarating ride through the challenges of frontline policing, and is packed full of dramatic incidents and colourful characters - whether a booby trapped cannabis farm, an elderly farmer’s wife with a shotgun, a dog-napping, or naturists fighting on the beach, the drama is matched by the well-scripted portrayals of the lives of the main characters. And the gay character is put right at the heart of the show from Episode One onwards - with rookie PC Jake Vickers' (the very spunky Jacob Ifan) first day on the job. Subsequent episodes show him dealing with homophobia at the station, and his growing attraction to suave defence solicitor Simon Reddington (played by the equally dishy Andrew Hawley).
Written by Julie Gearey (''Prisoners’ Wives'', ''Secret Diary of a Call Girl''), ''CUFFS'' is packed full of humour and humanity. A character-led drama as well as a police procedural, this is a show where the cops are forced to deal with everything the job throws at them and where work-based pressures are never left at the station door.
