He explores the depths of the human soul and its ability to triumph over loneliness, alienation and loss. Written in 1964, this was one of the first novels to have an openly gay protagonist, and its continuing relevance is reflected in Tom Ford's acclaimed film adaptation of it, starring Colin Firth in an Oscar nominated performance.
