An Englishman in New York DVD

In 1975, Quentin Crisp, author of the ground-breaking openly and unapologetically gay novel, The Naked Civil Servant, was 66 years old and had given up on finding fame during his lifetime. But when the film version of the book, starring John Hurt, was released to acclaim, he suddenly became a star and with it he opened the closet door with a bang. He moved to America and became the toast of New York with his witty barbs and eccentric behavior, but after controversially declaring AIDS to be a "fad, nothing more", suffered a fall from public grace. John Hurt is brilliant in reprising the aging Crisp, taking us on a journey into the soul of a man dealing not only with the ravages of age, but also the pain of being rejected and scorned by a community that once worshipped him. Nonetheless, this is a movie full of wit and candor on the nature of life and love, and the importance of living with integrity, and a portrait of a true gay icon and trailblazer.
