Another Country DVD

Based on the award winning play by Julian Mitchell, which was itself based on the real-life Cambridge spy Guy Bennett, this 1984 film launched the career of Rupert Everett, as well as Colin Firth. Guy Bennett (Rupert Everett) is a confident, hedonistic and ambitious schoolboy at Eton in 1930s England, yearning to climb to the top of his social strata and become one of the head boys, (known as the 'Gods'), and from there launch himself into the Foreign Service. At the same time, he ridicules the status quo by mocking the rules, maintaining a friendship with his Marxist roommate (Colin Firth) and taking part in an illicit and passionate love affair with another boy (the stunningly handsome Cary Elwes). However, when his affair is discovered and his ambitions thwarted, his disillusionment with the establishment sows the seeds for his eventual betrayal of his class and country. This is a beautifully acted and exquisitely made film, with a 'Merchant Ivory' lushness about it (very Maurice), yet also searing in its examinations of status and class, conformity and rebellion, sexuality and hypocrisy.
