Vacationland DVD

Filmmaker Todd Verow (Frisk, Anonymous) has based this perceptive and unapologetic look at being a gay teenager born on his own youthful experience. Joe, an 18 year old high school senior who lives with his single mother and older sister on a notorious council estate, longs to escape from his poor white trash roots and dreams of attending art school.  Not quite out to his family, or himself, and  desperate to raise the cash to get out of his stultifying hometown, he befriends an elderly artist who hires him as houseboy/model, and also takes on a part-time job. But Joe has another problem: he is in love with his best friend, Andrew, who plays on the high school football team. Joe has for years been in love with his best friend Andrew. The boys' girlfriends finally figure out the guys are more interested in each other than in them, and convince the lads to get it on. As Joe and Andrew explore the gay world around them (as well as exploring each other) a stranger figure from Joe's distant past comes forward, forcing Joe and Andrew to face their fears if they are to have a new, happier chapter in their lives. This film captures the awkwardness and delights of teen romance and sexual identity with great sensitivity.
