In his aim to make an honest film about sex, John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) has taken a revolutionary approach to Shortbus, an exploration into the lives of several characters living in present-day New York as they navigate the comic and tragic intersections between love and sex. The cast of actors work-shopped their own storylines over two years of collaborative effort, making for a film that is intensely personal and revealing, and unparalleled in its democracy. Male and female, straight and gay, the characters are trying to find each other - and by extension find themselves - as they converge at an underground salon called "Shortbus," a mad and magical world of art, music, politics, and polysexual carnality. The unabashed (and sometimes very funny) sex scenes and spirited performances from its mostly unknown cast (including Justin Bond of "Kiki and Herb" fame, singer Jay Brannan, Peter Stickles of The Lair, and Aussie muso Scott Matthew) make this probably the most honest film ever made about love and sex. Highly Recommended!
