Chris & Don: A Love Story is the fascinating true-life story of the passionate three-decade relationship between British writer Christopher Isherwood (whose Berlin Stories was the basis for the beloved musical Cabaret) and American Don Bachardy, thirty years his junior. From Isherwood's years in Weimar-era Germany to the couple's first meeting on the sun-kissed beaches of 1950s Malibu, through to the moving final days of Isherwood's life, their against-all-the-odds love story is brought sensitively to life through extensive home movie footage, artful recreations,  and very candid reminiscences from Don and many of their friends, including Leslie Caron and Liza Minnelli. There has been a renewed interest in Isherwood's life and writings since the release of the acclaimed Tom Ford movie adaptation of A Single Man, one of the first unapologetically gay novels. This documentary certainly gives fascinating details about the genesis of the book from the substance and emotion of Chris and Don's relationship.  Bachardy too eventually found his own fame as a portrait painter, coming out from under the considerable shadow of his life partner. This is above all an inspiring, revealing and moving celebration of a most extraordinary couple. Highly recommended.
