Controversial queer director Gregg Araki (of the powerful and moving Mysterious Skin) returns to the questionable taste and confrontational force of his early work in this new sexy sci-fi, comedic, psychological thriller! Cute Thomas Dekker is Smith, an 18-year-old bi-, or should that be tri-(anything) sexual living the life of a college freshman: lusting after his gorgeous-but-dumb straight surfie roommate Thor (Chris Zylka), hanging out with his lesbian bestie (Haley Bennett), and hooking up with random hotties. Teen angst soon gives way to more sinister concerns when Smith finds out that his small Southern California town is also home to a killer cult, who begin to infiltrate his world with messages of Armageddon. The manic, over-the-top subject matter (not too fantastical when viewed from the perspective of doomsday cults we hear about in the U.S.) is deftly directed by Araki to reveal beautiful human truths in and amongst the madness, culminating in a BIG bang that is nothing is not orgasmically cathartic! This is an anarchic romp of sex, nudity, angst, energy and colour, reminiscent of his earlier films (Totally F***ed Up, The Living End, The Doom Generation). This film was the closing night gala film at the 2011 Mardi Gras Film Festival.
