Ever since his wife was burned in a car crash, Dr. Robert Ledgard, an eminent plastic surgeon, has been interested in creating a new skin with which he could have saved her. After twelve years he manages to cultivate a skin that is a real shield against every assault. In addition to years of study and experimentation, Robert needed a further three things: no scruples, an accomplice and a human guinea pig. Scruples were never a problem. This is Almodovar's take on a sort of horror/thriller genre, a beautiful tale of obsession, revenge and the complexities of the human flesh. This film is done in his uniquely masterful directorial style, but still containing many of his trademark flourishes, including the wickedly dark humour and tele-novela plot twists he manages to elevate above the genre. Starring two former muses - Banderas and Paredes, it is the central character of Vera Cruz, played by the stunningly beautiful, openly lesbian Spanish actress, Elena Anaya, who is most mesmerizing as the (apparently?) hapless focus of Banderas' character's attentions!
