Based on the book by gay author David Ebershoff, ''The Danish Girl'' is the remarkable story inspired by the lives of real life Danish artists Einar Wegener and his wife Gerda Wegener, whose marriage and work evolve as they navigate Einar’s groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer into becoming Lil Elbe.
After standing in as a female model for a painting by Gerda (Alicia Vikander), Einar's (Eddie Redmayne) long repressed feminine identity surfaces and he begins to explore living as a woman named Lili Elbe. While supported by Gerda, Lili's manifestations cause their marriage to become strained, and they have to find ways for all three of them to live together. In the meantime, other men also become emotionally involved, and Gerda's art, inspired by her new muse, begins to gain her the recognition she has always been denied. Through it all, Gerda stands by Lili as she explores her true self and eventually undergoes one of the world's first gender-reassignment surgeries in the 1930s.
With stunning performances by Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander (who won an Academy award for Best Supporting Actress, even though she was as much a central character of the movie), this is a moving testimony to the difficulty of being true to one's self, and the power of love and acceptance. The movie also features out gay actor Ben Whishaw as Lili's love interest, and the very sexy and sympathetic Matthias Schoenaerts as Lili's first love and now Gerda's paramour. It is directed by Academy Award winning Tom Hooper (''The King's Speech'' and ''Les Misérables'').
