Six-time Grammy winner Whitney Houston was one of the most successful female recording artists of all time. ''Whitney: Can I Be Me'' is a compelling documentary about her life, death and legacy. Making use of concert and archive footage as well as newly-shot interviews with her friends and family, the documentary explores the journey of Houston's musical career as it rose to dizzying heights, as well as her personal life and relationships.
Most interesting is that it offers a raw and uncensored look at Whitney, not shying away from the issues of her drug-taking and rumoured bisexuality or lesbianism. The director explores the theory that the main cause of Whitney's unhappiness was that she was unable to come out as lesbian, and that having grown up in a gospel-singing Baptist church, she was unwilling to risk the condemnation of her family and community. Her strong-willed mother, Cissy, confirms in an interview with Oprah after her daughter's death that she would have been horrified if Whitney had come out as gay. Whitney is rumoured to have been in a relationship with Robyn Crawford, who was part of her management team, and ex-husband Bobby Brown is quoted as saying that Whitney might still be alive if Crawford had been accepted by others around her as part of Whitney's life.
''Can I Be Me?'' was Houston's favourite expression, one she used so much that her band member sampled it to play at the start of rehearsals. This film explores Whitney's central dilemma: even though she had made millions of dollars, had more consecutive number one records than The Beatles, and was recognised as having one of the greatest voices of all time, she still couldn't do what she wanted to do.
