Manly Affections takes one memorable story from Chris Brickell's award-winning Mates & Lovers: A History of Gay New Zealand, and develops it in exciting new directions.
Robert Gant was an English immigrant, an amateur photographer and a lover of men. Manly Affections takes us into Gant's lost world of small-town Masterton and Greytown during the 1880s and 1890s, and explores the intimate lives of New Zealand's male settlers. The book's 230 photographs offer a tantalising glimpse into colonial worlds of mateship and affection: as sitters for the camera, Gant's friends crossed the lines between emotion, pleasure, friendship and eroticism. Manly Affections is a visual history of gender and sexuality with a solid grounding in local history. Chris Brickell is Associate Professor in Gender Studies at the Otago University.
