This is the long-awaited dvd of the film which won accolades for Tom Ford's directorial debut, and for Colin Firth's Oscar award-nominated performance as George Falconer, a British literature professor living in Los Angeles in 1962, struggling to find meaning in his life after the death of his long-term partner, Jim. Sensitively adapted from Christopher Isherwood's novel, we follow George over the course of one day and actually see and respond to his struggle to find meaning. Ever since a car accident took the life of Jim, George has been on a desperate search for some degree of contentment, some sign that he can love again and will be loved in return. He finds some solace and distraction with his best friend and former lover, Charley (Julianne Moore), an aging, hard-drinking beauty, and one of his students, Kenny (Nicholas Hoult), who appears, at first glance, to be nothing more than an infatuated youth, but whose innate desire for meaningful human interaction may in fact be the key to George's emotional salvation. The power and breadth of A Single Man is not only in its uncompromising assertion of the legitimacy of gay relationships (without resorting to chest thumping), but its focus on humanity, and our common need to reach out to other people, while still making meaning of our own lives. The film is exceptional in its beauty and subtlety of observation, and the poignancy of Colin Firth's acting will astound you.
