Chronicling the turbulent lives of Pamela Keegan (Sally Williams) and her sister, Edith (Georgina Neville), as well as their tumultuous relationships with Kerrod Doyle (Davo Hardy) and Gavin O'Neill (Josh Wiseman), ''The Lives We Lead'' spans over 50 years of jealousy and injustice, as the restrictions and expectations placed upon each character in childhood influence their adult years with triumphant and tragic results. Over the course of their lifetimes, we see these rich characters evolve through their experiences and the ways that they change, or don't. The obstacles these characters face are true-to-life and relatable, and the performances are fierce and heart-warming.
One of the quartet, Gavin, is openly gay and seeks love and companionship, following an affectionless childhood. His turbulent, yet long-running relationship with Michael (played by Chris Price) is a testament to the perils of dating within the queer scene, when ego and sentimentality collide. However, the LGBT story arc is ultimately a positive one. Gavin's straight mate, Kerrod (played sympathetically by writer and director Davo Hardy) provides some full frontal nudity in this, his debut feature film. There is also some female nudity in Gavin's storyline, adding to one of the most awkward and unusual porno shoots depicted in film.
''The Lives We Lead'' is a new Australian film, shot in and around Sydney, exploring themes of growing up and growing apart.
