Established as an actors’ co-operative in 1979, the Griffin Theatre Company Ltd was incorporated in 1980 and made the strategic decision to only produce Australian plays in 1982 having taken up residence at the Stables Theatre in Kings Cross. The Company’s first Artistic Director, Peter Kingston, was appointed in 1986 (his inaugural production was Michael Gow’s Away).

Griffin Rising was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s History Awards, the judges commented:

... Senczuk’s detailed account of the people, productions and politics of the Company is complemented by a wealth of illustrations that bring to life the vibrant spirit of a theatrical community. ... This is history firmly anchored in its time and place and accordingly draws the reader into the turbulent world of 80s theatre and inner-city Sydney.
