Eat Up! : Food, Appetite and Eating What You Want

$29.99

Product Description

Ruby Tandoh was a finalist on the Great British Bake Off in 2013, and here writes a thoughtful, inspiring and entertaining book about our relationship with food. Having had issues with body image and eating disorders in the past, Ruby has written this much-needed antidote to our diet-obsessed culture, reminding us that eating should be as much about nourishing the soul as it is about nourishing our bodies. This is part-memoir, part call-to-arms, laden with hilarious, intimate, thought-provoking insights (and a few recipes too!)

This books won't tell you what to eat. And it won't give you a magic formula for health and happiness. But it will fill you with joy at the idea of food: at the sharp fizz of a can of ice-cold pop, or at the mere concept of waffles. It will fire you up about the magic that happens as our bodies transform the blandest sandwich into blood and bones, and reveal how our mealtime rituals and personal tastes connect us with our loved ones, identities and culture.

In ''Eat Up!'', Ruby Tandoh celebrates the fun and pleasure of food, taking a look at everything from gluttons and gourmets in the movies, to the symbolism of food and sex. She will arm you against the fad diets, food crazes and bad science that can make eating guilt-laden and expensive, drawing eating inspiration from influences as diverse as Roald Dahl, Nora Ephron and referencing everything from the movie ''Moonlight'' to ''The Very Hungry Caterpillar''. Filled with straight-talking, sympathetic advice on everything from mental health to recipe ideas and shopping tips, this is a book that clears away the fog, to help you fall back in love with food.

Ruby Tandoh is a British baker, columnist, author and former model. Apart from her books and journalism for publications like The Guardian, she has co-founded ''Do What You Want'', a zine about mental health with her partner, Leah Pritchard.

Author: Ruby Tandoh.

Hardback, 248 pp, Published April 2018.

Reviews:

I read it greedily. Thank you. (Nigella Lawson)

Ruby Tandoh has written a hand grenade of a book. What I love most about ''Eat Up!'' is all of the books that it isn't. It isn't a recipe collection full of soft-focus food pornography, the author lifting something glistening to her perfect lips, alone in an immaculate kitchen. It isn't a manual for how to save your soul by way of micronutrient-inflected mortification of the flesh. It is not a memoir of one young woman's emotional journey, served rare with a side of gawking and a comforting, sweet finish. Eat Up is part-Delia Smith, part-Irvine Welsh. (Laurie Penny - New Statesman)

Ruby's writing in ''Eat Up!'' is moreish. Her third book is witty, thoughtful, epigrammatic, sometimes scholarly and always passionate ... her mission is to replace our collective nervousness about food with guilt-free appreciation (Andrew Billen - The Times)
