With his trademark wit, candour and relentlessly perceptive eye, Edmund White, the beloved 85-year-old 'paterfamilias of queer literature' (New York Times) delves unflinchingly into the aspect of his life which has inspired so many of his masterpieces: sex.

Documenting everything from covert fumblings in the repressed American Midwest of the 1950's to the Arcadian gay debauchery of New York in the 1970's; through the terror of HIV and the age of sex on the apps, White has seen – and experienced – it all.

Unyieldingly honest, outrageously raucous and arrestingly touching, The Loves of My Life can but further cement White's unquestionable role at the apex gay canon

"One might think that there could be little left to say about Edmund White’s sex life as he has documented it very candidly and eloquently across a number of memoirs - in Paris (Inside a Pearl), in New York during the 1960s and 70s (City Boy)  and in My Lives which certainly read like a sex memoir, and even had one chapter removed from it by his American publisher as it was too graphic! However, White estimates that he has sex with around 3000 men, and so he has the material, and at 85-years-old a remarkable recall of his entanglements. Having read his previous memoirs, the stories recounted in this new book all seem new. Although White is so entertaining, erudite and witty, even if there is some repetition who would care! Some of the chapters are devoted to specific men, others are titled Hustlers, First Lust, Fuck Buddies. The Hustlers chapter has one of the wittiest lines in the book - “In the early eighties I would hire countless men in a Cretan village. It was paradise. Everyone was available for a price, even the mayor.”

Yet amongst all of the very entertaining stories White unfolds, he also manages to educate the reader by name dropping numerous books and authors, and so the book is also perfect fodder for book recommendations from an impeccable reputable source."
