Julian Punch entered the Catholic priesthood as a gay man.  The ‘gay priest’ who received his training in the same seminary as George Pell left the priesthood after much inner conflict to face bitter resistance to his efforts to bring a better life to the gay community. He has been arrested on trumped-up charges, vilified, had his house burnt down, has received several awards for his human rights efforts in Timor-Leste and is a recipient of an Order of Australia.

He rejected the church because he believes it is corrupt, out of step with modern thinking and intolerant in the extreme. He fought off the reactionary National Civic Council and continual political and religious interventions into his good works. He now lives with his partner Brian Doran near Hobart and remains a vigorous activist. This is his story. As seen on the ABC's 'One Plus One' interview by Jane Hutcheon.
